DISTRICT STATEMENT REGARDING STUDENT ASSIGNMENT AT ROBERTS MIDDLE SCHOOL Shield Logo

With regard to the assignment recently issued by a teacher at Roberts Middle School, it is important to provide context.  One of the District’s goals this year is training in the areas of diversity awareness and social justice.  In this case, the intent of this assignment aligned with the goals of the District and was issued in four seventh- and eighth-grade classes.

The intent of this lesson was to engage in an activity in diversity designed to promote tolerance and break down stereotypes.  The activity, which was drawn from the University of Houston’s Diversity Activities Resource Guide, was used as an ice-breaker during the first full week of school such that students can better understand each other and participate in group activities more successfully.

It is the responsibility of a 21st-century educator to deliver a holistic education to all of their students.  In Cuyahoga Falls, one of our objectives is to engage in conversations concerning diversity and social justice.

Unfortunately, some parents were upset and concerned by this particular assignment and thought it was not age-appropriate.  The teacher and District offer their most sincere apologies for the offense caused by the content used in this assignment.  Future assignments on this topic will be more carefully selected.

Q & A ON SCHOOL SAFETY IN CFCSD School Safety Q&A Logo

At the School Safety Meeting held on Thursday, March 8th, those in attendance who had questions were asked to submit those questions in writing as they left the meeting.

Here, Dr. Nichols' answers those questions.

(Answers are also posted on the website under the Superintendent's Quick Links to the left of this article.)

CALAMITY DAY - MARCH 21, 2018

Obviously, today’s weather has caused problems. Early this morning, when we began assessing conditions for the day, everything was good. As the morning progressed, the snow picked up and crews were keeping up with it just fine. In making the determination for cancellation, decisions need to be made by 5:30 a.m. due to the fact that our students attend programs across the region and our buses begin trips very early. Parents make arrangements for the care of their children very early when calamity days are called. Clearly, the conditions worsened after the time when a cancellation would typically be made. We, along with the other districts in our Compact, decided to remain open rather than make a call too late.  In retrospect, perhaps we should have cancelled much earlier.

All absences today will be excused. No students will be marked tardy. As always, parents can and should make the decision on whether or not to send their children to school. Our bus drivers have been told to take their time. As such, some may be late arriving at stops. We appreciate your patience.

Congratulations to Ms. Schofield, Mrs. Moffet and Mr. Gomez.  We look forward to working with all in a continued effort to push the district forward. Thank you to Mrs. Gunter for her years of dedicated service to the District.

Likewise, we extend our appreciation to the voters in the community who supported our school district!  The passage of the Emergency Levy was essential; we will begin executing the expenditure plan as presented immediately.

A huge thank you is extended to all who worked so diligently in an effort to share the message.  Please know that while the additional revenue is essential, the needs are great.  As a result, we will continue our focus on fiscal responsibility.

Once again, thank you!

CFHS Halloween 5K Fun Run - Cancelled 5k

Due to inclement weather forecasted for Saturday morning, the hard decision was made to cancel the Halloween 5K for this Saturday October 28th. Since it is a holiday weekend, we wanted to make the decision soon enough in the week to let families make different plans. If you have registered already, an email will be coming to you from runsignup.com and your money will be reimbursed. This was an extremely difficult decision but with the number of small children walking with their families, we are erring on the side of caution since there is a 90% chance of heavy rain.

With this being said, the pancake breakfast hosted by NHS will also be cancelled. However, the Trunk or Treat event held by CFEA will still take place at 12:00pm. Look for more information on this from CFEA soon.

Educating students takes a piece of our mind and our heart. Test score results do not always come in a quantitative format to reflect this. Key to Safe Driving
Motor vehicle accidents are the leading cause of death among 15-to-20-year-olds, with nearly 5,000 teen drivers dying each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Experts blame many of these accidents on poor driver training. For example, the average 16-year-old soccer player has had 1,500 hours of soccer coaching, while the average 16-year-old teen driver has had only 50 hours of driver coaching.

To raise awareness about the need for better training of teen drivers and to improve teens’ driving skills, Key is sponsoring Key to Safe Teen Driving, a
FREE program that will travel to schools in Cleveland, Dayton, Cincinnati, Stow, Canton, Toledo, South Bend, Indianapolis, Columbus, Ann Arbor, Rochester and Buffalo. The program is conducted by professional driving instructors from The Mid-Ohio School and teaches teens driving skills that are not taught in normal driver’s education programs.

·     Key’s mission is to help clients and communities thrive. Key to Safe Teen Driving helps teens thrive by teaching them skills that normal driver education programs don’t address.

·
Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death among 15-to-20-year-olds. Key is sponsoring Key to Safe Teen Driving because it is designed to improve teens’ driving skills and raise awareness about the importance of proper training for young drivers.

·
Key is teaming with The Mid-Ohio School, one of the country’s leading driver training programs. More than 15,000 teens have graduated from the Mid-Ohio School’s teen defensive driving program. Kumho Tire USA is also an important partner in the program.

·
Key to Safe Teen Driving is aimed at high school students and is being conducted in the summer because June, July and August are the worst months for teen traffic accidents and fatalities.

·
Registration is free and begins May 10 at www.keytosafeteendriving.com.

3rd Annual Fill-A-Bus

The Cuyahoga Falls PTA's are sponsoring the 3rd annual Fill-A-Bus.  Our goal is to be able to supply enough canned goods for Good Neighbors for the entire summer.  Each school will be collecting cans and each building will count the cans to see who can bring in the most!  Please consider bringing in a canned good.  If each student brings one in, the high school will be donating over 1,000 cans!  Please take items to the main office.  We will be collecting cans all next week!

Hidden in Plain Sight

Report Card Survey

Cuyahoga Falls is looking at utilizing an online K-12 report card where parents have access to their child's report card through Progress Book.  NEONET has assured us that we can allow parents the option of viewing and/or printing their child's report card right from Progress Book.  This would eliminate the necessity of mailing them home and/or trusting students to deliver them home.  We would like to move forward with this but we need some parent input first.

Please help us by following the link below and giving us your feedback.

Front Lawn of High School—7th Period (1:50 pm)
It’s that time of the year again, when the Business Management students are creating and preparing for the Ninth Annual Holiday Tree Lighting which will be held on the school’s front lawn during 7th period on Friday, December 9. This year the Business Management student’s have created beautiful gold and black ornaments from plastic strips that were so generally donated by senior Emily Burkle’s father. Business Management students are dedicating our tree as the Black Tiger Tree this year.
As in the past, ornaments can be purchased for $1 during lunch or from any Business Management student in honor of, in celebration of, or in memory of someone special. During the Tree Lighting ceremony, all names will be read and an ornament will be placed on the tree in that person’s honor. One hundred percent of all money will go to Good Neighbors. This year Business Management’s goal is $900. Please support our efforts by purchasing an ornament.

Buy a Tiger Paw today!!
The summer is flying by and it is now time to think about the fall and FOOTBALL!  I sent this form earlier in the summer but I know many of you don't check your email often, so this is just a friendly reminder about our stadium tiger paws.

I have attached the order form for this year's Tiger Paws fundraiser.  Like last year, it will be a minimum donation of $20 for a tiger paw in the parking lot and $30 for a stadium paw.

Please send all order forms and money to my attention at the high school.  Forms and money should be received by August 19th so that we have time to paint the paws before our first home game!

Also,  please forward this order form to anyone you know who would like to show their CF school spirit.  Businesses, alumni, students and even out of town fans can purchase a paw.

If you have any questions, please let me know!

Dual Enrollment at CFHS

Attention parents and students at CFHS –

I am very excited to share with you news of our developing dual enrollment programs at the high school.  Dual enrollment is a credit flex option for students whereby they can earn both high school and university credit at the same time.

Currently, we offer Enriched Pre-Calculus with the University of Akron taught by Mr. Kern.  Adding to that course for next year will include Comp 1 & 2 with Lit, Psychology and College Algebra through Stark State.  Lastly, we are in the early stages of working with Kent State to offer a music theory course as well as a course for Spanish.

All 10th and 11th grade students with at least a 3.0 GPA have been invited to a meeting to be held next Thursday, February 28th during I/E in the auditorium.  In this meeting, I will review the courses we will be offering and at which university. I will also review the process for students to be admitted to the universities. Each university has their own application process.

2013 Graduation Date - Tuesday, June 4th
The tentative date for Graduation for the Class of 2013 will be Tuesday June 4 at Blossom Music Center
AUTISM Events
WALK FOR AUTISM
The 2nd Annual Akron Walks for Autism on June 9th at Lock 3 in Akron raises funds to allow ASO to continue its mission of improving the lives of all affected by autism through advocacy, education and family friendly programs and activities. The funds raised from this event allow ASO to provide life changing programs such as Lose the Training Wheels for many special individuals in the counties of Medina, Portage, Stark, Summit and Wayne. Form a team and walk with us!

BIKE CAMP FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES
Registration is now open for Lose the Training Wheels Akron to be held July 30th - Aug 3rd at the Copley High School Auxiliary Gym. This is a 5-day camp that teaches individuals with disabilities (not just autism) to ride a 2 wheel conventional bicycle without training wheels. Akron LTTW will be able to accommodate 40 riders on a first-come first-served basis. In order to make this program a success, we also need to enlist the help of 80 volunteers to serve as spotters for the campers. This is a wonderful and rewarding VOLUNTEER opportunity for anyone 16 years or older with their own transportation interested in dedicating 75 minutes each day over the 5 days of camp teaching a person with a disability to ride a bike…. And get exercise from walking/jogging alongside the camper!

If you have questions or would like additional information about these events or ASO, please don’t hesitate to  visit www.autismsocietygreaterakron.org .
Congratulations
The Business Management Program is proud to announce that Amanda Shackelford placed 3rd  in the BPA (Business Professionals of America) State Competiton for Human Resource Management.  Amanda will travel to Chicago for National competition as a finalist in April.  Liz Hoenigman also placed in the top ten for her competition in Economic Research Individual.  Please congratulate the students on their success.

Progress Book Parent Access Update - New Accounts being issued
Over the summer the developer of the ProgressBook application implemented a new Parent Access account module in order to enhance security and ease of management of Parent Access accounts. This security enhancement will also now allow parents to more easily access their child’s information, reset forgotten passwords, and tie multiple students to the same account.

Due to the upgrade in the Parent Access account module, the accounts that you have used in the past will no longer function. In the beginning weeks of school you will receive a document that includes step by step directions of the new account creation process as well as the registration keys necessary to tie your student(s) to your newly created account.

We would like to apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause you. We will work diligently to get the new account information to you as soon as possible so that you may closely follow your child’s progress.

Kindest Regards,

Patrick McKinney
Technology Coordinator

CFHS and CVCA Student Tie for First in Cuyahoga Falls Rotary 4-Way Speech Contest

Using Rotary’s four-part test for the ethics of an action, five students from CVCA and CFHS battled to a near tie.  There was a dead heat for first place and the other three were only marginally behind.  Victoria Benyo of CVCA and Zach Whitmore of CFHS tied for first and Victoria won the coin toss to represent Cuyahoga Falls at the District Competition held April 17 at Beachwood High School.  When Victoria was unable to attend, Zack did well, unfortunately losing in the first round to the final 3rd place winner.  The Falls Rotary Club awarded Victoria and Zack $75 each and the other speakers $25 each.

Memorial Day - No School Today for Staff or Students
Delayed Start Letter to Parents from Dr. Holland
September 27, 2010

Dear Parents/Guardians:

In the past, the Ohio Department of Education has allowed for five calamity days per year for each school district in the state of Ohio. As you may be aware, beginning with the 2010-2011 school, the allowable calamity days per year have been reduced from five to three for each school district in the state of Ohio.

The state’s reduction in calamity days will force Cuyahoga Falls City Schools to consider other alternatives to automatically closing school on snowy mornings. It is recognized that there will be days that road and weather conditions will prohibit our students from getting to school safely. However, in order to avoid using a full-day closing, the district will consider using a two-hour delayed start of school if road and weather conditions appear to clear or be suitable later in the morning. This process will assist the district in maintaining our three calamity days for days that necessitate closing school. Please note that any calamity days or closings beyond the three permitted days will result in extending the school year.

The determination as to whether school is closed or delayed begins early in the morning. School district employees will assess the road and sidewalk conditions before the final determination is made to delay or close school.  A delay will be called if we believe that conditions may clear enough for us to have school. As soon as the decision has been made, an automated Alert Now message will be sent to students and staff. To allow for a successful automated phone system process to occur, please assist us in making sure your contact information with current phone numbers is updated. You may update this information by contacting your child’s school.

In the event of a delayed start of school, there will be a two-hour delay for all schedules. Bus schedules will be adjusted by two hours, and the schools will begin two hours after their regularly scheduled start times. Private school transportation will also be on the two hour delay schedule. The school day will end at the normal scheduled time. Parents should continue to monitor TV and radio stations because the possibility remains that if the conditions do not improve, school may be cancelled for the entire day. Also, a second Alert Now message will be sent if, in fact, school closes for the day.

It is important for parents to have a plan in place in the event of a school delay or closing. Children tend to adjust to the situation if you have reviewed your family’s plan ahead of time.

Thank you for allowing us to educate your child(ren). We will continue to utilize school delays or closings with the student’s best interest and safety in mind. If you have any questions regarding delays or school closure, please contact your child’s school.

Respectfully,

Dr. Edwin S. Holland
Superintendent of Schools
