DISTRICT STATEMENT REGARDING STUDENT ASSIGNMENT AT ROBERTS MIDDLE SCHOOL Shield Logo

With regard to the assignment recently issued by a teacher at Roberts Middle School, it is important to provide context.  One of the District’s goals this year is training in the areas of diversity awareness and social justice.  In this case, the intent of this assignment aligned with the goals of the District and was issued in four seventh- and eighth-grade classes.

The intent of this lesson was to engage in an activity in diversity designed to promote tolerance and break down stereotypes.  The activity, which was drawn from the University of Houston’s Diversity Activities Resource Guide, was used as an ice-breaker during the first full week of school such that students can better understand each other and participate in group activities more successfully.

It is the responsibility of a 21st-century educator to deliver a holistic education to all of their students.  In Cuyahoga Falls, one of our objectives is to engage in conversations concerning diversity and social justice.

Unfortunately, some parents were upset and concerned by this particular assignment and thought it was not age-appropriate.  The teacher and District offer their most sincere apologies for the offense caused by the content used in this assignment.  Future assignments on this topic will be more carefully selected.

CALAMITY DAY - MARCH 21, 2018

Obviously, today’s weather has caused problems. Early this morning, when we began assessing conditions for the day, everything was good. As the morning progressed, the snow picked up and crews were keeping up with it just fine. In making the determination for cancellation, decisions need to be made by 5:30 a.m. due to the fact that our students attend programs across the region and our buses begin trips very early. Parents make arrangements for the care of their children very early when calamity days are called. Clearly, the conditions worsened after the time when a cancellation would typically be made. We, along with the other districts in our Compact, decided to remain open rather than make a call too late.  In retrospect, perhaps we should have cancelled much earlier.

All absences today will be excused. No students will be marked tardy. As always, parents can and should make the decision on whether or not to send their children to school. Our bus drivers have been told to take their time. As such, some may be late arriving at stops. We appreciate your patience.

CFHS Halloween 5K Fun Run - Cancelled 5k

Due to inclement weather forecasted for Saturday morning, the hard decision was made to cancel the Halloween 5K for this Saturday October 28th. Since it is a holiday weekend, we wanted to make the decision soon enough in the week to let families make different plans. If you have registered already, an email will be coming to you from runsignup.com and your money will be reimbursed. This was an extremely difficult decision but with the number of small children walking with their families, we are erring on the side of caution since there is a 90% chance of heavy rain.

With this being said, the pancake breakfast hosted by NHS will also be cancelled. However, the Trunk or Treat event held by CFEA will still take place at 12:00pm. Look for more information on this from CFEA soon.

Kindergarten Readiness Night

Weather Watchers

'Tis the season to watch the weather, both snow and cold; thus, we thought we would share the decision-making process with regard to school closure.  If possible, we like to close school by 7 p.m. the night before impending weather to allow everyone the opportunity to make arrangements and to save on some of our District costs.  If that is not possible, we close prior to 6 a.m.  While there are no hard and fast rules, consideration is given to the amount of snow and the timing of the snowfall.  Generally, if the major thouroughfares of the city (State Rd., Graham Rd., Portage Trail, Tallmadge Rd., etc.) are clear and passable we will try to remain open.  That said, we also try to examine the sidewalks so that our students who walk to and from school have a reasonably clear pathway.

With regard to the cold, the decision is somewhat easier and more scientific.  According to wind chill charts, dangerous levels begin at approximately at 15 to 20 degrees below zero.  Therefore, we will try to remain open until the wind chill factor reaches 15 degrees below zero.  Of course, there are no guarantees when it comes to weather; thus we offer these remarks as guidelines not as rules.

Ultimately, it is always the parents' choice to send or not to send their children to school.

2012-2013 Second Semester Discipline Report

Cuyahoga Falls City Schools

Discipline Data

2012-2013

2nd Semester

Summary:

Comparing 2nd semester discipline data with that from last year suggests we had 12 fewer suspensions involving 8 more students; however, the total student population was up this year. Thus, a fairly consistent percentage of students were suspended (3.7% last year versus 3.5% this year). That said, the total number of days served increased from 707 last year to 761.5 this year (7.7% increase) and we had one additional expulsion.

The number of suspensions at the elementary level increased from 33 last year to 40 (21.2% increase) this year and the high school from 100 last year to 126 (26% increase) this year. Meanwhile the number of suspension in our middle schools dropped from 116 last year to 71 this year (38% decrease).

Lastly, the number of major incidents (fighting, narcotics/tobacco, or weapons) decreased from 90 last year to 68 this year. Likewise, the number of menacing incidents (bullying, threats, or harassment) dropped from 35 last year to 11 this year.

As always, we will analyze these data to determine our next steps to insure continued positive trends. See more for a building-by-building analysis.

Students' Praise for Their Teachers

Educating students takes a piece of our mind and our heart. Test score results do not always come in a quantitative format to reflect this. On the September 22nd professional development day, Cuyahoga Falls staff were reminded of our reasons for doing what we do. This video brought to life the district's mission statement "Every Student, Every Day, Every Opportunity".

Thank you to all who helped make it possible!

Thank You! Cuyahoga Falls family.. Emma Freeman Won the Scholarship!!!!!!! logo

From Mr. Wargowsky of the CFHS Arts den:

"I want to say thank you to each and every one of you  that took the time out of his/her day to vote for Emma Freeman.  Emma made it to the finals and will receive a scholarship to Cleveland State University, a Microsoft Surface 3 Tablet, and a year’s supply of Coca Cola beverages and $150 cash.  It is amazing what can happen when we work together in support of these amazing students. The time and commitment you displayed to support her has allowed Emma to achieve something that can forever change her life, and allowed Cuyahoga Falls to once again be proud of what our students can accomplish.  This Friday, Emma will present to Cleveland area “sharks” to potentially have them invest in her idea.  If you see Emma, wish her luck and congratulate her.  Thanks to all of you, Craig"
